Two coastal views of the Mexican Pacific shore, an engraving from a Dutch edition of George Anson's "Reize rondsom de Werreld", published around 1760. The upper view is titled in French "Vue de l'Entrée de Chequetan ou Seguataneo, restant au N.E. à la distance de 5 Milles", with a Dutch caption beneath, and shows the approach to Zihuatanejo. The lower view is "Vue de l'Entrée du Port d'Acapulco", with its Dutch caption "Gezigt van den Ingang van de Haven van Acapulco". The plate is numbered at the upper left and lettered "D" at the lower right.
Each view is a long, narrow strip. The upper view shows a high, serrated mountain range above a calm sea, with two ships visible low on the water at the right. The lower view shows the darker hills of the Acapulco coast, with a ship under sail at the left and a smaller one at the center.
Anson's circumnavigation of 1740 to 1744 was aimed at Spanish possessions in the Pacific. Acapulco was the port where the Manila galleons ended their crossing, and the profiles here were made so that other ships could recognize the landfall.
