A lighthouse and a rough harbor sea, an original steel engraving from Meyers Universum, published by the Bibliographisches Institut in Germany around 1850. The plate is printed in black and lettered "Black-Rock" with "New-York" beneath it.
Waves break against a tall stone lighthouse with a lantern gallery at the right, set on a low fortified wall that runs across the middle distance. In the foreground a small boat heaves in the swell with several men aboard and a white horse, while gulls wheel overhead. A large square-rigged ship and other sailing vessels labor in the heavy sea behind, under dark, stormy clouds, with the flat shore faint on the horizon.
Black Rock was a harbor village on the Niagara River, at the point where Lake Erie flows out, near Buffalo, and a rival to Buffalo in the early 19th century before it was absorbed into the city.
