Bosporus Harbor View from Pera, Istanbul Arsenal, Antique Bartlett, c.1839
Description:
An elegant and detailed 19th-century view of the Arsenal of Constantinople as seen from Pera, after W.H. Bartlett. This engraving presents a lively harbor scene along the Bosporus, with ships at anchor and the city rising in layered architectural forms across the water.
Published in London around 1839 by Fisher, Son & Co., this work exemplifies the refined steel engraving techniques of the period. The composition balances foreground architectural elements with the expansive cityscape beyond, offering both intimacy and grandeur.
The skyline of Constantinople is richly depicted with domes, minarets, and densely built structures, conveying the scale and importance of the city during the Ottoman era. The foreground includes cypress trees and traditional buildings, framing the view and adding depth.
The original hand-coloring enhances the subtle interplay of light across the water and architecture, making this a particularly decorative and collectible example of Bartlett’s work.
Note: All items we offer are authentic period works of art over 100 years old. The print is sold unframed; any framed images are shown for presentation and interior inspiration only.
