"M. Bougainville hoisting French Colours on a small Rock, in Maghellan Streights", an original copper engraving published in London by Alex. Hogg at the King's Arms, No. 16 Paternoster Row, as the imprint at the top of the sheet reads. The title is lettered on a plaque beneath the image, and the picture is set inside a tall architectural frame with a scrolled top.
Three officers in tricorn hats and long coats stand on a rocky islet, one holding up the flag marked with the French arms while two raise their hats. At the left a boat full of men is drawn up below the rock, and a large sailing ship lies at anchor beyond. The scene shows the French explorer Louis Antoine de Bougainville claiming ground in the Strait of Magellan during his expedition of 1766 to 1769, which was the first French circumnavigation of the globe.
