The interior of a house at Unalaska in the Aleutian Islands, a line engraving after the drawing by John Webber made on Captain Cook's third voyage, issued in London in the early nineteenth century (circa 1820). The plate is lettered "Inside of a House in Oonalashka." It is printed in black on uncolored paper. Faint lettering below the image points to Webber as the artist; no engraver or publisher is named.
The view looks into a large timber-framed dwelling of the Unangan people, with heavy posts and roof beams, sleeping platforms hung with woven mats along the walls, and a figure climbing a notched post toward the opening in the roof. A man in a long coat stands in the foreground, a mother and child sit near the center, and further family groups sit and work in the recesses at either side.
Cook's ships called at Unalaska in 1778, and Webber, the voyage's official artist, recorded the island's people and dwellings in drawings that became some of the best known images of the North Pacific. Small plates like this reissued them for a wide readership in popular collections of voyages in the decades after Cook's death.
