The harbor of Havana, Cuba, an original steel engraving printed in Paris in the 1860s. The plate is lettered "La Havane", drawn by Lebreton and engraved by Ed. Willmann, with the printer's line of Chardon.
Rough water fills the foreground, where a rowing boat carries several men through the swell. A large three-masted ship lies at the left and other ships ride at anchor along the shore, with steamers and small craft near the waterfront. The town lies along the water at the foot of steep hills, with a fort or lighthouse at the left and a signal station on the highest hill.
Havana was the leading Caribbean port of the Spanish empire and a center of trade for the region. The plate belongs to a series of Latin American views published around 1867 for the European market.
