Before 1700: Dutch Golden Age
The age of the Dutch masters. Amsterdam dominated chart making for most of the 1600s, and the charts of Blaeu, Janssonius, Doncker, De Wit and the Van Keulen family, often hand coloured and decorated with cartouches, ships and sea monsters, are among the most sought after of all antique charts. Prints of the period record the fleets and sea battles of the Dutch Republic and the first voyages to the East Indies.
